Phil Twyford, a Member of Parliament from New Zealand’s opposition Labour Party, wrote via social media that 163 lawmakers from nine countries have denounced the Myanmar military’s elections and called on the international community to reject them. The countries involved include New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, East Timor, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom. The MPs stated that the military-organized election in Myanmar is neither free nor fair and lacks legitimacy. They described it as merely an attempt by the illegal military regime to reshape Myanmar under its control. The MPs also sent an “Open Letter from MPs on the Fake Myanmar Election” to the international community, warning that because the Myanmar military continues to carry out airstrikes on the population before the election, the country will not be peaceful or stable after the vote, and violence and unrest will likely increase.
