Public and Stakeholders' Reactions

Mizzima - News in Burmese

A border-based revolutionary group has launched a new website that allows people inside and outside Myanmar to safely express their rejection of the junta-run election planned by the Military Election Commission. The site — https://mm-sham-elections.vercel.app/ — is designed with strong security protections. It does not collect or store any personal data, enabling users to participate safely even under surveillance and repression. Each phone or computer can submit only once, and users simply click to declare that they do not accept the junta’s sham election. One of the organizers, Ye Baw Kyaw Gyi, said the collected vote-rejection numbers will be shared internationally to demonstrate public opposition to the military’s attempt to claim legitimacy. The website also includes sections where people can share their opinions about the junta’s election and describe threats, coercion, or abuses that may occur during the staged voting period. However, organizers acknowledge challenges: “Because of internet restrictions, information barriers, and fear caused by military repression inside the country, the total numbers may not fully represent the entire nation,” Ye Baw Kyaw Gyi said. As of the afternoon of December 4, more than 800 people had already used the website to reject the sham election. With the junta’s first phase of the so-called election scheduled for December 23, organizers hope participation will reach hundreds of thousands, showing massive public resistance.
