U Maung Maung Aye, a member of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), stated that since the international community does not recognize the terrorist military’s election, there is unlikely to be any significant change resulting from the election “script” orchestrated by China. He made this remark at a press conference held on February 1 in Mae Sot, Thailand. Although the military’s China-backed election has concluded, it is clear that it has failed to gain international recognition. U Maung Maung Aye pointed out that the military did not achieve the results it wanted, and therefore the election outcome cannot be used to bring about any meaningful political change, either internationally or domestically. “The military staged a sham election and continues trying to gain recognition. But as leaders and media can clearly see, the junta’s fake election has not gone according to plan. Even after the election, they have failed to obtain the international recognition they sought. From the moment China alone openly endorsed and wrote this script, it was evident that the military would not achieve its desired outcome. Not only did it fail, but the election results will not meaningfully change the junta’s situation at home or abroad,” he said. The NUCC and the National Unity Government (NUG) jointly formed the Joint Working Committee (JWC) to oppose the illegal sham election. Working together with allied revolutionary forces, international actors, and the public, they have successfully campaigned to ensure that governments and international organizations do not recognize the junta’s illegal election. He added that preparations are underway to continue coordinated efforts after the election to reject recognition of the illegal election results. Accordingly, the United Nations, ASEAN, and the international community are urged to completely reject and oppose the junta’s sham election, refuse recognition of any military-backed interim government formed as a result, and continue efforts to deny it legitimacy.
