People’s Party Chair U Ko Ko Gyi Also Defeated in Military-Run Election

The People’s Party (PP) performed poorly in Myanmar’s military-run election, with its leader U Ko Ko Gyi losing his parliamentary race in Yangon to a USDP candidate as the military-backed party swept all constituencies in the region. Despite contesting nationwide, the PP secured only eight seats across the first two election phases. The three-phase election was marked by low turnout, alleged pressure on voters, ongoing armed conflict, and voting disruptions in resistance-controlled areas. The USDP has already secured enough seats to form a government, with the military planning to convene parliament in March, while major opposition parties like the NLD remain dissolved and their leaders, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, remain imprisoned.
